Why EMDR Therapy Utah?

Talk therapy changed your life without a doubt. But even with all the new awareness and insight, there are areas where you still feel like you are white-knuckling it when old patterns come up. Deep down, you know you want more healing.

Affirmations Only Go So Far

You still have pesky negative beliefs about yourself and all the affirmations in the world aren’t cutting it! It feels deep. You don’t always know how to describe the deepness but when asked how familiar it is, you immediately report “super familiar.” You have triggers that keep you frozen and in fear when you’d actually like to be saying something, and moments of fleeing in times you’d actually like to stay.

Insight Isn't Going to Help This

There’s this feeling that all the insight in the world won’t change these dynamics. Not because you are broken but because you have diligently tried. The needle has only moved so far. With this knowledge, you began searching on google. You looked up therapists near me and began reading different bio’s. You got on Reddit forms and began asking friends what type of therapy they have done. Someone mentioned EMDR therapy, and the kind of deep change it could provide. It sounded like exactly what you didn't know you always needed. You immediately searched EMDR near me to find out more.

You Are Ready for Deep Change

You want to feel better, a lot better. You are ready to feel pleasure and joy and trust that it won’t be fleeting. The idea that maybe more of the pain and exhaustion could be lifted brings a smile to your face. You want to feel confident in your own skin and you are ready to feel lighter. You’d love that negative belief of “I am not loveable” to be lifted and to feel more self-worth. Not just through affirmations but all the time self-worth.

Here is where Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, EMDR in Utah, comes in…

Wait, what? I know it’s a mouthful! EMDR is pretty damn sweet! If you haven’t tried it and you have heard of it, you might know that it is a highly regarded treatment option for trauma. I promise you, you will never have to remember what EMDR stands for. But let’s break it down so you can know if EMDR therapy in Utah is a good fit for you.

EMDR therapy in Utah to start feeling like yourself again.

EMDR is founded on the discovery that the brain has a natural way to recover and heal from traumatic events and memories. By utilizing bilateral stimulation, meaning moving from left to right, either through eye movements, tapping, or tones - I tend to use and prefer eye movements - the unpleasant memories can unstick and the brain can begin to properly store the memory. That is where the desensitization comes in. The memory will still be with you but it will no longer feel so overwhelming and distressing. I like to say to clients “It essentially moves the past from it ‘sucks’ to it ‘sucked’ where it needs to be - past tense.”

EMDR therapy in Utah could be right for you if you struggle with any of the following:

Distressing life experiences, Anxiety, Depression,  PTSD, Trauma, and Panic Disorders. Or even a singular traumatic experience – for example, a car accident. Or working through negative beliefs about yourself such as “I am not loveable.” I know that sounds like a LONG laundry list of things that it can help with. EMDR has been researched extensively in a multitude of environments, with a multitude of issues and it truly works.

The nuts and bolts of how EMDR Therapy helps.

Essentially when you go through a traumatic event or a distressing life experience your brain might “store” the event and this memory gets stuck. Frozen in time. An event might have happened years ago but you are still functioning in fight, flight, freeze modes. Or in other words still in a protective stance. I like to think of trauma in the way of when things are too much, too fast, and too stressful. What EMDR does is that it taps into a natural healing mechanism, rapid eye movement, to help those memories get unstuck and reprocess like it wants to do.

Talking about these stuck places can be triggering, painful, and just make you feel WORSE and not better but not with EMDR.

What is great about EMDR is that it does not require you to go into specifics. In a session, you do not need to explain in detail the distressing experience, which can be more dysregulating for some. Sure, we might talk about emotions, thoughts, and sensations but EMDR does not focus on changing these things. Instead, it focuses on letting the brain heal itself by reprocessing the memories. Magic! EMDR will help you to feel settled and steady again. Life will continue to throw you punches and after you have done EMDR, your bandwidth to handle what life throws at you will increase. Say goodbye to overreactions and say hello to mindfully responding!

Frequently Asked Questions about EMDR in Utah

  • How do I know if EMDR is working?

Great question! After you have moved through the first few phases of history taking and stabilization, attention will be directed to a negative image. Once an image has been discussed beliefs, emotions, and body sensations are explored. And thus, will begin the reprocessing phases. You will know if EMDR is working when a positive belief and statement have unfolded. This will let you know the issue is resolved.

Perk for all those homework haters. EMDR doesn’t come with homework in between sessions! Great news for people who thought homework was a drag, huh?

  • How long are EMDR sessions?

EMDR sessions are generally 60 to 90-minutes long. Every client is different in how they respond to the process and the session length. We will discuss together what feels right for your process.

  • Does someone need to be trained in EMDR?

Yes! EMDR therapy is a specialty. It is an intervention that needs extensive training. To be considered an EMDR trained therapist, I had to undergo 40 hours of in-person training and consultation. Just to clarify, I am Certified in Brainspotting and trained in EMDR.
